yeah, players these days are just due rollers. everything comes out of a box or a book. I started in the red Basic book. I stopped upgrading when Gary Gygax said it'd changed enough. 2E. I make my worlds. I make my civilizations. I make my gods. leave your tieflings and artificers in candy land. this is for real role players who are willing to commit to years to complete a campaign if they survive that long. roll your save verse petrification/polymorph. we'll see you in the next iteration as a cautionary tale fo those who wanna make a passive perception check

Exactly, there's no fun if you stick to just rules and rollin' dice. I want the DM to be a legit Story Teller. I want to know the weather, the humidity, the sounds. Don't have us all traipsing across the Serengeti, and then immediately step into a bog. There's got to be clues that the view is changing, that there's a vague musty petrichor smell in the air, etc. D&D is a schlog without a great DM.

This is me, started in ‘79 on A&D and Basic. There was a lot of death back in the day. Yes Survival IE.. XP and loot. First adventures were in the dungeons under Castle Greyhawk and of course the OG Keep on the Borderlands.

"What's your character's name?" "It doesn't matter." How true that was and if ... IF ... you got high enough to feel it warranted a name, it probably died the next session, and that was an honor in and of itself.

We had ONE set of books shared between about a dozen people, notebooks served as character sheets, all hand written too and we used other game pieces or whatever we could find to "build" our boards and yeah if you died, the DM tore the character sheets in half. It was brutal and we loved every minute!!!!
