But at the top level, most winning smashes are far less glamorous: they go straight at the body of the player at the net. Here is why. When you smash cross-court or down the line, you give a good defender a clear line and time to slide and dig it off the side glass. When you smash at the body, into the hip or the paddle shoulder of the net player, you take away their reach. They cannot extend their arms, they cannot turn the paddle, and the ball dies at their feet. The mistake most players make is swinging for maximum power and aiming for the corners or the fence. You miss more, you leave the ball short when it comes back, and you get countered. Instead, pick the near player, aim at their body, and hit at around 80 percent with control. A well-placed body smash wins the point more often than a full-power bomb. Drill it: have a partner feed you lobs and aim every smash at a cone placed where a net player's hip would be. Placement beats power almost every time. Where do you aim your smashes, at the body or at the corners?
