I don’t know who gave these people the authority to tell someone, “Don’t read the Quran while you’re drinking wine.” She is as she is, with all her habits, and she is doing something (here, trying to understand the Quran). If drinking wine clears her mind, then so be it; she is not performing an act of worship. Rise above the trivialities and focus on what truly matters.

Not everyone who comments is actually knowledgeable on the Quran. If they were, they would know that only a handful of verses deal with legal rulings - 500 out of 6,236. And most important they would know: the first 13 years of revelation were about the belief in One God and the importance of good character. Most of the rulings that we have today came during the last 10 years of revelation when the Muslims had settled in Medina and established the first Islamic state along with the first written constitution (which specifically dealt with interfaith coexistence). The reason this is important to know is because as Muslims we take our guidance from the Quran and Sunnah (the Prophet’s ways (PBUH)) which includes taking into consideration the phased approach that God took in the Quran, particularly when dealing with non Muslims and new converts. If God showed our ancestors that grace then we should extend that to our fellow non Muslims when seeking truth. In terms of alcohol, the Quran did not prohibit alcohol immediately but rather took a phased approach as alcohol was part of Arab culture at the time so prohibiting it outright wouldn’t have worked, particularly with alcoholics who could actually die or suffer serious illness if they quit cold turkey - and so: the first phase instructed Muslims to be sober when they pray and the second phase then prohibited it completely. In terms of you, as a non-Muslim, reading the Quran while drinking, as a lawyer I’m going to get technical. If you were reading it in Arabic, you would be required to be in a state of purity which is achieved via ablution or a shower (where you still follow the steps of ablution). Does drinking mean you’d have to redo your ablutions though? Nope. But if you’re drunk then yes (because you probably won’t remember if you broke your ablution such as by releasing gas 😂). In any case, you’re reading the Quran in English and so you are not reading the literal Word of God and therefore not required to be in a state of purity - i.e., you can respectfully disregard the comments! 😂

it would be helpful to check how alcohol was ruled as forbidden. You will be surprised how the Quran took Muslims gradually from the point to encourage them to avoid drinking when they prayed. When they started to abide by the encouragement, the rule was set. So, you are not violating anything considering the stage you r going through. I as a Muslim Fi not take as an act of disrespect. All we saying is that you will understand the Quran better in a sober frame of mind. Cos remember that alcohol alters your state of mind. So thats why read the Quran when you are in the correct state of mind. I so happy that you respect this book and our religion this way.

You’re not obliged not to drink while reading the Quran, when you finish reading it you will realize that wasn’t a mandate for you. It’s might just the people who encouraging to what makes them feel comfortable , or best guess they want you to read it with full mental clarity.

Be careful of the “haram police” they like to comment on womens videos about the quran and hadiths (texts) telling you xyz is haram (not allowed). if it doesn’t apply to you ignore it. You are not muslim so you are not banned from alcohol.
