Ken Allen lived at the San Diego Zoo, where he became famous for repeatedly outsmarting his keepers. Whenever he escaped, he didn’t cause chaos or threaten visitors. Instead, he calmly wandered along the zoo’s public paths, stopping to look at the other animals almost as if he were another guest. There was one exception: Otis. Ken reportedly had a serious grudge against a fellow orangutan named Otis. During his adventures, he would sometimes make a special trip past Otis’s enclosure just to throw rocks at him. Zoo staff couldn’t figure out how Ken kept escaping. They increased the height of the walls, installed electric fencing, and even disguised employees as tourists in hopes of secretly watching him reveal his escape route. Ken seemed to recognize them, though, and would simply sit there until they gave up and left. Eventually, the zoo brought in professional rock climbers to inspect the enclosure and identify every tiny crack or handhold Ken might have been using. The walls were modified and smoothed to make climbing out nearly impossible. Yet Ken’s reputation as a master escape artist only grew.
