@skynews: One of Andy Burnham's flagship pledges is to push decision-making out of Westminster and give regional mayors more power. But Cornwall poses a problem for the PM, with local opinion split on whether or not the country's most southerly corner should elect yet another politician. Sky News' political correspondent Lucy McDaid visited the southwest to understand the PM's dilemma. #cornwall #politics #uk
I’m sick of the glamorisation of Cornwall, yes it’s gorgeous but day to day life is very different to the Hollywood version shown on tv and social media. Nearest international airport with half decent routes is 3 hours away, only one road and rail line in and out, all the banks have closed, no local post offices, no decent 5g network, crippling water rates, council tax, lack of jobs, schools are bursting and underfunded, major drugs and homelessness problems. But hey all they show is the sunshine and beaches and that idyllic lifestyle we are supposedly living 🙄

The people of Cornwall don’t trust the council let alone a mayor who will have more power over them…too many people in Cornwall vote for right wing bigots, giving those politicians more power is a dangerous step…

Oh yes of course a mayor will solve everything!
People want more power, so let's centralise it all into one person!

I would've thought Devon & Cornwall is a classic example of an area that would benefit from an overall mayor.
.
But if they don't one then let them continue with the council system. 《Shrug》
