@musicnfacts: 1968 — Paul Mauriat • Love Is Blue There are songs that need words to tell a story, and then there is Love Is Blue. Paul Mauriat's breathtaking instrumental version turned a Eurovision song into one of the biggest international recordings of 1968. The melody was composed by French composer André Popp, with lyrics by Pierre Cour. The original song, L'Amour est bleu, was performed by 17-year-old Vicky Leandros for Luxembourg at the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, where it finished fourth. Paul Mauriat heard something special in the composition and transformed it into an entirely instrumental orchestral arrangement. His recording featured lush strings, horns and the distinctive harpsichord sound that became one of the recording's signatures. Then something extraordinary happened. A radio DJ in Minneapolis began playing Mauriat's version repeatedly, and listeners responded immediately. The recording spread across American radio and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1968. It remained at No. 1 for five consecutive weeks, making it the first recording by a French artist to top the American chart. It also became the biggest American hit of Mauriat's career. And perhaps the most remarkable fact of all: this enormous international hit had no lyrics at all. The melody itself told the story. More than half a century later, Love Is Blue remains one of the most beautiful and recognizable instrumental recordings of the 1960s. Sometimes, music really does not need words. #PaulMauriat #LoveIsBlue #1968 #InstrumentalMusic #ClassicHits
