Oh we very briefly had a system like this in the US where the TV took a card from the cable company and you wouldnt need a service box. Unfortunately not only did very few people take advantage of the system but very quickly the resolution exceeded the cards capabilities.

All TVs, DVD players used to have SCART sockets in Europe, the original idea was for encrypted TV (canal Plus in France), but a later additional benefit was it accepted RGB signals so DVDs looked much better. As for the PCMCIA slot, the latest version works via USB. I had at one point, a Fransat card so I could get French TV in the UK via satellite… Talking of that many European Tvs can work with DVB-T2, DVB-T, DVB-S2, DVB-S and DVB-C, thats terrestrial, satellite and cable…🙂🙂🙂

In America, we had/sorta have a system like this still. PC-cards called "cable cards" are mandated by the government to be available for customers of pay TV, so that they can watch it non-company-provided DVR's [like Tivo, although they quit making them].
