That post from mielle is reflective of many people’s idea of unhealthy hair vs healthy hair. People often just throw afro hair off to be unhealthy for its very being and it is why many are always in search for a curl cream, gel, leave in just something that elongates the curl. It is how many brands make their money sadly. It’s very reductive… shiny defined vs dull and undefined … like okay is it healthy? Some of us just want our hair healthy lol. Lots of people have defined shiny hair that have damage and there’s people out there who just wear their fros undefined or get braids. I actually seen more trouble always trying to define my hair as someone seeking to retain length with my afro hair.

You're right and thank you for your perspective. We take full responsibility for what happened. We agree that comparing hair textures is wrong, especially because of the negative stereotype that portrayal can unintentionally create. And we understand why it hurt, especially coming from a brand built for and with Black people. The message does not reflect how we see or celebrate textured hair. All hair textures are beautiful. We own it and we will do better.

My hair is naturally not shiny, shine is not a property that immediately indicates health. I get comments calling my hair matted/etc just because it isn’t visibly shiny. So yeah the post was distasteful, is odd for a natural brand… separately used to work in marketing it’s a mess (of an industry) so I actually can see how this slip up might have happened but not ok.
