It is insane to me that Nvidia has what amounts to a monopoly here. It’s entirely first mover advantage, and there _have_ to be players that will build comparable hardware and soon. It is simply not the case that Nvidia has hardware magic. They are just doing the obvious thing in response to the workloads that would have been way too expensive to justify pre-AI. Admittedly spinning up a hardware competitor isn’t trivial and takes time, but so does building data centers. I give them two years tops before they are having to at least contend with a serious competitor. This is relevant because if they start facing competition at the same time they are trying to milk their monopoly for every last drop, it may not go well for them.

I feel like NVIDIA has been trending towards more openness. Open-source GPU modules for Linux, contributions to Vulkan and OpenCL, and the FOSS Fund are positive signs, these still struggle to offset closed CUDA, but I do understand the thought process on that.
