People always ask: how much money do I need to start this kind of life? A lot of people think building a homestead or living off-grid requires a huge amount of money upfront. Our experience was the opposite. We started this journey with about $1,000, living in an old camper on leased land while saving money. From there, we built things little by little whenever we had the money. A few things that helped us make it work: • Start with shelter first, even if it’s simple • Land doesn’t have to be perfect our first 3.16 acres was $5k • Look for rent-to-own options for structures like sheds or owner financing land. • Build in stages instead of trying to finish everything at once • Start small with systems (our first solar setup was a $150 kit) • Upgrade over time as your budget allows Most of our homestead was built step by step, not with one big investment. Our cost is under $40K, and we’re still upgrading as we go. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, the biggest thing is just starting somewhere and building from there. You don’t need to build everything at once. Just build the next thing you can afford.
