Song: Don’t Let Go - Zavyre Thank you for being part of everything we’re building together. 🤍🕊️ My first EP drops this Friday…👀
Caluza (1895–1969), originally recorded in London in 1930 by Caluza’s Double Quartet. • Composer: Reuben T. Caluza • Ensemble: Caluza's Double Quartet (male and female vocalists accompanied by Caluza on ragtime-influenced piano) • Original Recording: Recorded in London (September–October 1930) at HMV Studio B and released on the Zonophone label (and His Master's Voice / EMI). • Genre/Style: Early South African makwaya (choir/quartet) music, blending choral traditions with ragtime and vaudeville influences. Subject Matter & Themes • The Narrative: "Ingoduso" tells a cautionary tale about a rural migrant worker who leaves his fiancée behind in the countryside to seek a better life in Johannesburg. • The Message: The lyrics warn against the temptations and perils of fast city life—including illicit liquor (shebeens), crime, jealousy, rival gangs, and the risk of ending up in jail or losing true love. • Social Commentary: Like much of Caluza's work, the song uses catchy, hymn-like or ragtime melodies to deliver deep, serious commentary on the realities of migrant labor, urbanization, and segregation in early 20th-century South Africa. Modern Adaptations & Legacy • Releases/Reissues: The 1930 recordings have been reissued on historical collections such as Caluza's Double Quartet 1930 (Heritage CD, 1992). • Contemporary Revivals: Composers Philip Miller and Tshegofatso Moeng created contemporary reinterpretations and new multi-disciplinary performances of Caluza's catalog (including "Ingoduso") with a 12-member ensemble and jazz instrumentalists, released around Heritage Day. #rubentcaluza #classicalmusic #jazz #zuluchoral
