From Al Sadeem Observatory, we observed the star Suhail (Canopus) last night (August 25th). Canopus is the second brightest star in the night sky and it was one of the most important stars in the lives of ancient Arabs. Because observing Suhail in the night sky meant that hot days are ending and cooler and more moderate weather is coming ahead. So much so that the Arabs had a famous saying that translates to: “at the coming of Suhail, fear the heavy rain.” Suhail is a white giant star, it shines 10 times brighter than the Sun and it’s at roughly a 300 light-year distance from Earth.⁩
