@philosophyminis: There is a kind of post you find online where somebody, usually standing in front of a whiteboard, tells you how much you are actually spending on coffee. They tell you to cancel your subscription, stop going on that holiday, and work a few more hours. 'Stop spending so much. Start saving more, and you can buy a house just like I did.' And while that may be true, according to Karl Marx, there is a hidden and deeper price you have to pay. Marx argued that any system that forces us to cut down on our spending is also forcing us to cut down on who we are. Because when we have to give up books, or seeing a movie, or going to the pub with friends, or getting dinner with your family, or travelling the world, we give up on a version of ourselves. These are not disposable luxuries. They are the only way we have of expressing and becoming who we are. The difference is not between short- and long-term goals. The difference is between living and alienation. Because even if you reach your capitalist Shangri-La, living in your penthouse apartment with your glass office, and driving your fast car, the person walking the street in that swanky suit will no longer be you. Having to constantly minimise and suffocate what you enjoy means you end up destroying who you are. So, of course, save. Be frugal. Be parsimonious. Be thrifty. But remember Marx's warning: Not all luxuries are disposable. Where you spend your time, and where you spend your money, is a reflection of who you are and who you want to be.

I'm not sure, 'I consume therefore I am' is a position Marx would uphold. this is stretching it, but still persuasive

The idea that if everyone worked harder and spent less they would be able to buy a house sounds simple. Until everyone does this and the price of the house then rises since everyone is now competing for the same scarce resource.

this is absolutely true. Our identity is made up of our choices and experiences and if we have to spend each day denying ourselves and focused of only survival we loose our humanity

If completely stopped spending any money and spent the next 5 years staring at the wall and saving instead, I'd actually be further from a downpayment on a house than I am right now. Property prices are increasing so much faster than wages, by the time I've saved 30k for a downpayment I'll need 60k instead

So what you're saying is: if you want a house, but you can't stop yourself from buying coffee, you're not the type of person who buys houses. You're a coffee person, and that's okay. 😭

That's why I choose the life a live. Could I be richer? More free? Of course. But I choose that other things are more important. And I make that choice everyday because it could always be my last day.

I'm inclined to agree with this take when it comes to time and certain fundamental experiences, we shouldn't sacrifice that day of leisure and connection we have on the weekend for a bigger number on a bank account it literally reduces the time we are ourselves, and we shouldn't sacrifice fundamental experiences like traveling and connecting with loved ones or being in good health for future profit (and that shouldn't be a decision at all, good health and human connection shouldnt be monetised) however reducing our consumption of harmful hedonistic goods like alcohol and luxury cars can actually benefit our self expression through not letting external factors influence our behavior (like pleasure substances, or status chasing)
