a lot of it started with Robin Williams. In Aladdin, he was fantastic as the genie. His voice acting, coupled with his body language/actions and attitude gave the illustrators and writers lots to play with. Aladdin wasn't just a hit because it had Robin Williams, but because Robin Williams was a fantastic actor, whether in front of the camera, in a soundbooth or on stage. Hollywood took this as "oh, people want big name actors." instead of "oh, people large and small enjoy thoughtful, enjoyable and emotive animated performances."
