When my mom was growing up in the 50-60’s, four families/neighbors shared the same phone line and that was pretty common. I believe she said each family had a different ringtone so that’s how they knew it was their call, but you could also pick up your phone line and listen to your neighbors conversations. 😂

We just called it “the phone” - no other description was ever necessary. “Answer the phone”We never questioned which one.
