In Romania, where the Carpathians rise like the vertebrae of some ancient, slumbering beast, you find yourselves exiled from noise and consequence, enthroned instead on a vast bed that feels less like furniture and more like a continent of linen. The cabin stands entirely in glass, a fragile reliquary set in the middle of muscular forest, as if modernity had the audacity to kneel before wilderness and say, look, we surrender. The trees press close, curious and unblinking, their bark furrowed like the brows of old philosophers who have seen kingdoms flare and vanish. The stove mutters to itself in a dialect of sparks and resin, perfuming the air with pine and something faintly primeval. Outside, these forests are among the last great primeval stretches in Europe, sheltering brown bears, lynx, and wolves who move through the undergrowth like rumors. Inside, a freestanding tub waits in pale stillness, an ivory punctuation mark in a sentence written by timber and shadow. Steam will soon rise and blur the edges of the world, turning the glass walls into a watercolor of branches and sky, as if you were bathing inside a living painting. Night arrives without apology. The forest becomes an inkwell, and your cabin a lantern dropped carelessly among roots and stone. You lie there listening to the small combustions in the stove, to your own breathing braided with another’s, and you realize that memory is being forged in real time, like iron hammered while still incandescent. In a land so often reduced to legend and caricature, you discover something quieter, more feral, more true. When the glass reflects only your silhouettes against the dark, who are you becoming in this wilderness?
