After three rounds of Accutane, 10+ years on BC, antibiotics, spironolactone..and now working as a naturopathic doctor specializing in acne, I can confidently say this: Not a single person I’ve worked with has had completely “normal” labs… whatever “normal” even means😅😅 Most people are told their labs look fine because everything falls somewhere within the standard reference range. But being within range doesn’t always mean a marker is OPTIMAL, and optimal is what we’re looking for when it comes to chronic complex conditions like acne. Basic bloodwork only gives us one snapshot. Sometimes the markers most relevant to acne weren’t tested at all, the timing of the testing matters, or several “normal” results actually form a pattern when viewed alongside your symptoms, cycle, nutrition, stress, gut health, medications, and acne history. This is where we zoom out and ask better questions: Is your blood sugar truly stable? Are you ovulating and producing adequate progesterone? Are your androgens optimal..not just within range? What’s the state of your gut microbiome? Do you have thyroid autoimmune activity? Acne isn’t explained by one dramatically abnormal marker. More often, it’s the accumulation of several smaller imbalances that need to be interpreted in context!!! So, if your labs came back “normal” and you’re still breaking out, it doesn’t necessarily mean everything is truly optimal or that there’s nothing left to explore. Again, it means we need to zoom out, look beyond isolated numbers, and make sure the right markers and complete panels were ordered for YOUR specific case. Most importantly, numbers on a page are just numbers on a page. The real value comes from working with someone who understands acne and knows how to connect those results with your symptoms, history, cycle, nutrition, gut health, stress, medications, and every other piece of your unique puzzle!! Your acne has a reason. Let’s find yours. #acne #hormonalacne #acnetips #acneproblems #clearskin
