I was born in 52, I don’t remember what you describe. Family was close, no divorce , no crime like today. People were house proud even though they didn’t have much. They weren’t dirty. No bad language. Excellent schools. All I remember was a happy life.

My dad was born in Manchester in the 1940s. He remembers the absolute amazement of getting rehoused in a new council house with an inside bathroom. His parents worked opposite shifts in a factory to make sure someone could be at home with the kids.

Yes. Most of us in the 50s were poor in places like Manchester and Liverpool. Damp walls, no central heating, vermin, outdoor toilets. That was poverty.

people talk about it with nostalgia, that is was a wonderful time and no indoor plumping or heating etc was a good thing and that youth is soft, when people should be around and thankful that their kids and grandkids dont have to grow up in poverty like this.

Correct. I remember visiting a school friends house in early 1970s and was shocked, no heating, no bath an outside toilet no carpets and drinking out of jam jars

Born in 1959 so an evil boomer who washes in champagne. Yep poverty was tough. At 6 yrs old I shared a small bedroom with my 9 yr old sister and my 1 yr old and 17 yr old brother. Our bath was in the scullery (kitchen) with a heavy lid that served as a worktop for meal prep. The big butler sink in the kitchen was was washes, teeth brushing, washing up, washing clothes. We never had evening meals but relied on school dinners. We truly did have bread & dripping most nights. Absolutely no fizzy drinks, crisps, breakfast cereals, biscuits, one small present at Xmas. Our living room had no windows so we always had a light on. But we were loved.

Born 46, we didn’t have anything but neither did anyone else. London bomb dumps were a playground, we were fed, clothed and schooled but most of all never take trouble home.
