@theirishtimesnews: A Deadly Crossing: They had come from near and far: women, men and children, from The Gambia and countries further afield. Many were the breadwinners for their families. They left without saying goodbye, worried any leak could put their plan to reach Europe in jeopardy. Their boat set sail in the last week of June with the goal of reaching the Canary Islands. On board were more than 200 people, according to those who joined the trip. Within weeks, only 36 would still be alive.
