Nepal has over two thousand lakes like this. Forty-seven are rated dangerous, and most of them aren't even Nepal's — they sit across the border in Tibet. In 1985, ice fell into one of these lakes near Everest. The water didn't break the barrier. It climbed over it and cut it away from the top down. Four hours later, a hydropower plant and fourteen bridges were gone. You can't concrete over a fix at 15,000 feet with no roads. So Nepal flipped the problem: instead of a stronger dam, a smaller lake. Cut a channel, drop the water, install sirens downstream — and hope you found the right lake. Last week, they hadn't. A mountainside collapsed into a river at the Tibetan border — no lake involved at all. It dammed itself, then let go.
