At 9 months, it’s time to start going… smaller 🫐 Here’s why: Around 9 months, many babies begin developing what’s called a pincer grasp 👌 That simply means they can bring the tips of their thumb and index finger together to pick up small objects — the same motion we eventually use for things like pulling zippers and buttoning shirts. Before babies develop this skill, they usually pick food up using their whole hand, with their fingers and palm working together. That’s why, before around 9 months, we often serve larger pieces of food. Those bigger pieces are easier for baby to grab, hold, and bring to their mouth independently before they have the fine motor skills needed to pick up tiny pieces. Why does this matter? Research suggests that self-feeding can help protect against choking, and for baby to self-feed, they need to be able to actually pick the food up on their own. Before the pincer grasp develops, small pieces can be much harder for them to grab independently. Once you start seeing that thumb-and-finger pinch appear, you can begin offering appropriately prepared smaller pieces for baby to practice with 🫐🥕🥚 Just remember: development isn’t tied to an exact birthday. Some babies develop their pincer grasp a little before 9 months, while others may need a little more time. Want to help baby practice this new skill? 👌 Search for recipes and prep guides in @tummi app to learn more about what to look for and how to support their development. #startingsolids #babyledweaning #blw #newmom #babydevelopment
