STORY TIME… because this one is personal. 💳📉 I’ve always considered myself financially responsible. I take pride in my credit, financial literacy, and financial stability. But one lesson I had to learn the hard way is that sometimes helping the wrong person can put everything you’ve worked for at risk. I allowed a family member I trusted with my LIFE, access to my credit card with VERY clear instructions: EMERGENCIES ONLY. And if there was ever going to be a large purchase, CALL ME FIRST so I could prepare for the bill. Instead, I started receiving high credit usage alerts on my phone. Charges were being made in Mississippi while I was living in Texas, and before I knew it, a $25,000 credit limit had been pushed to over $14,000 in debt. They had SWIPED that card like the limit was infinity. 😩 At that point, it wasn’t just about money. Someone I trusted had put my credit, financial security, and everything I worked hard to build in jeopardy. I had to make the difficult decision to completely cut contact and I’m at peace with that decision because I know one thing for certain: IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. One of the biggest lessons I learned was this: Be careful who you extend yourself for financially. Before you put your name, credit, or money on the line for someone, ask yourself, “Would this person do the same for me?” If you have to question the answer, DON’T DO IT. But what I’m most proud of is what happened NEXT. I DIDN’T FOLD. I DIDN’T MAKE EXCUSES. I GOT TO WORK. I gave myself a timeline and became extremely intentional about paying that balance down. I cut back on eating out. I stopped buying bags, shoes, clothes, and unnecessary stuff. Every dollar I could spare went toward restoring what I had worked so hard to build. And when I say I OVER GRINDED, I mean exactly that. My normal workload was around 5 clients a day. I pushed myself to 8–10 clients a day because I had a goal in front of me. I knew the sacrifice was temporary, but the financial freedom I was working toward would be worth it. Through discipline, dedication, sacrifice, strategy, and a whole lot of HARD WORK, I watched that balance go from $14,562.49 to $181.57. As the Balance decreased, I kept asking for increases on the limit to keep lowering utilization while I finished paying it off. So I went from a 25k limit to 41k limit. And while aggressively attacking that debt, I PAID OFF One of my VEHICLES TOO. 🙌🏾 I originally set out to get my credit utilization back below 9%. TODAY, IT’S 0%. 💳✨ That didn’t happen by accident. It took sacrifice. It took saying no to things I wanted. It took long days. It took discipline when nobody was watching. And most importantly, it took strength from GOD when I was tired and frustrated. This experience taught me that you can recover financially from somebody else’s bad decisionsbut you have to be willing to take control, create a strategy, and WORK that strategy. So for anybody looking at a large balance thinking, “There’s no way I can get out of this…” YES YOU CAN. Give yourself a goal. Give yourself a deadline. Cut what needs to be cut. Work harder when necessary. Protect your credit. Protect your peace. And most importantly protect access to what YOU worked for. Some lessons cost money.
