Importantly, this is still a proposal, not the current law. A petition is now calling for: -Retaining the current 5-year residence requirement -Fair transitional arrangements for people already on their citizenship journey -Clear evidence and policy justification before any major change is introduced This isn’t about saying citizenship rules can never change. It’s about asking that any change is fair, proportionate and evidence-based, particularly for people who planned their future around the existing system.
