All my siblings were spanked with love and are wonderful citizens. We all love our parents as well. It’s about the one thing we can all agree on…we totally love and respect both of them and are grateful they were our parents

Absolutely. My mom would break wooden spoons over my backside, belts, sticks, metal cooking spoons, etc. and she laughs about it to this day. Laughs about how she had to hit me harder because my backside was so hard It could break stuff. absolutely insane that I write that sentence out

I usually like to ask adults if you could discipline your children without corporal punishment and still get effective results would you want too? The scary part is hearing some say no to that question. 😔

I never spanked my kids and they are teens now and the most emotionally/socially mature and regulated humans. I’m so impressed with them daily. We also don’t have any of the classic teenage problems of them pulling away from us. We are as close as ever. My daughter’s words to me is literally what I want my inner voice to be. (I grew up in a toxic fundy/IBLP household… and have lifetimes of trauma.)

if a child is too young to comprehend why they're being hit, then it's pointless abuse. if a child is old enough to understand why they're being hit then they're also old enough to respond to other discipline so it is therefore pointless abuse.

It’s so true. My parents never hit my siblings and I . Their explanation was there’s so many ways to correct a child that hitting them is the form of not having control as a parent. My mom even said she tried once to spank us , we didn’t flinch, run away or negatively react to her raising her hand that she realised we didn’t fear her or my dad. The one thing that made us squirm was making us sit still and tell her why we did what we did wrong and listen to her tell us why we did was wrong and the consequences that might happen outside in the world. We have ADHD so being still was the worst and having to explain our low impulse control was the worst . We were naughty kids but the things we did were corrected one time . Plus natural consequences was allowed too

half of these comments are terrifying 😐 thanks for posting about this. got spanked with a strip from a truck mud flap, and even as an adult I'd tense up whenever my father walked behind me. no it doesn't screw up every kid but it breaks enough of us.

i read a book about why we should not spank our kids. in the prologue of the book the author spoke of how greatful he was to have parents that spanked him because it was good for him... yet he wrote a book about not spanking.. its difficult to break the cycle of spanking, but i have observed the positive effectiveness of other forms of discipline.
