Thousands of supporters stayed in the Rat Verlegh Stadion, raised their lights and sang his name while Mats and his partner Elba stood together on the field. A banner in the stands carried a message for their little girl: “Heaven has gained another little star.” Even the visiting supporters joined in. There was nothing anyone in that stadium could say to take away their grief, but for a few minutes the couple did not have to carry it alone. Football is often built around rivalry, noise and results.
