Completed my MSW in May 2026. I did advance standing two year program. I worked two full time jobs, class in person and hybrid and complete 20 hours a week for practicum. And can’t even find a job right now. I’m over it.

I love that you are advocating for social work students, and I genuinely feel honored that you used my quote! The expectation to struggle is treated almost like a rite of passage in social work. Just because previous generations had to overwork, accept unpaid labor, and sacrifice their wellbeing doesn’t mean the next generation should have to do the same. I entered this field because I believe in its values, which is why I think our schools should be held to those same values. It isn’t fair that I’m beginning my career as a therapist already burnt out from what it took to get here.

No because WHY wouldn’t it be required for internship placements to PAY us if it’s required to graduate!? I always thought that was fucked up. And some placements do pay, but they are so competitive.

I was telling this to my friend. They brainwash us from the start with saying, “you do social work for helping others, not for money.” But you never hear people say, “ you do engineering for the building, not for the money.” Seriously how do they expect us to help others while we barely survive. It doesn’t make sense. We can help with good hearts and still be paid the appropriate amount for the work we do.
