Looking at the data, healthcare professionals receive 4 years less training and are paid less than half of US healthcare professionals. When comparing their salaries, half of the population of Portugal makes more than healthcare professionals. Based on the data, it seems like Portugal solution is to reduce training and reduce pay of healthcare professionals. That has led to overall worse retention of said professionals. That doesn’t sound like a better solution. Just a different bad one that looks good in some ways.

Retired podiatrist here. Enjoy your videos. We lived in Portugal for 4 years and just moved back to the US. Had private insurance and had an SNS number. Specialists were often seen in the public hospitals. We had colonoscopies, emergency room visit (lacerated hand, 35 minutes in and out and with private insurance 35 euros. Access very easy in the private system and our public doc always encouraged us to see her. We opted for private care as not to bog down their public system. All our American friends did the same. My concern moving back was health care and violence. But the grandkids here helped our return. Keep up the good information and I will happily answer any questions about Portugal healthcare.

Lower fees at point of care generally means higher taxation and less pay for primary care and very…VERY long waits for specialty care. This is not translatable to the US

Also had shoulder surgery in Portugal. Excellent care, not understaffed in the hospital and under general anesthesia, I had to stay at least 1 night. Here I was sent home the day of surgery under general. No post op X-rays. I took 3 sets after I did surgery. Intraoperative, post op immediately and 3 days later in office.

Research shows that Portugal has a severe lack of doctors. If you can never find a doctor your health expenditures will be low. Because the public system is so bad about 40% now have private insurance.
