Him being in psychosis made the story more interesting then him being possessed. But it would've been impossible to bring him back if he wasn't possessed.

I think both arcs lend something interesting to the story, and you can still interact with emerald twilight as is. I’m with you.

i think, as someone who was a huge fan of spectre hal and preferred that characterization of him to johns/post/johns, it made spectre retroactively worse and cheapened. but if someone only cares about gl hal its probably a good change for them

As someone who grew up in the post-fall era and does like Green Lantern Rebirth quite a lot, in retrospect the change wasn't worth it.
The original story of Jordan's fall is notoriously rushed, which is one of the issues fans had with it, but what it represented and what it meant for the larger DC universe cannot be overstated as it introduced the ides that even the greatest of heroes can fall. It served as this narrative stake in the background which is this empty space in current stories.
If no one ever falls or strays from the path, what weight do stories about the temptation to do so really have?

I dont think him being influenced by Parallax robs Hal of that agency tbh, he was possessed by his own fear that day, his actions his own. Parallax is simply the call of evil, and he gave in completely during those events. He himself knows that he did what he did that day, I think people go too far with their assumptions.
I am personally not a fan of the original heel turn either to be honest, it felt like a cheap ass 90s comic storyline that was followed up with Kyle's girlfriend getting fridged. Comics were just chasing a very cynical rainbow back then. Im sure the Spectre run is therapeutic but I havent gotten to it yet.

I’d agree BUT I think that because they let Hal still feel the guilt over it and have the other guardians still blame him for everything after this that it doesn’t take away the interesting aspects of it

i think it makes is more interesting for a redemption for Hal tbh. ive always viewed it as Hal got infected while at his mentally weakest and let his parralax 'take the wheel' because he didnt have the will to fight on. and Hal has to live with the fact he didnt fight back against parallax and let him do so many terrible things. its basically the symbiote spiderman story but if peter gave in after aunt may had died🤷♂️

It was the Cyborg Superman that blew up the city, who also (temporarily) killed the Eradicator. Hal’s fall was too rushed. A last minute idea of editorial, it had none of the lead up it should have had to really work for me. His hell turn was pretty much a single page heel turn.

I am of the mind that the retcon made it more interesting, as Johns built upon his own lore in the Sinestro Corps War, which I think is his best work on Green Lantern. He was able to bring Cyborg Superman back into canon after destroying Coast City, and use fear as a motivator to extinguish life. Parallax was able to take over another Green Lantern in Kyle. And seeds are planted for the War or Light.

To be completely fair, a lot of people do not have the context of the time. The Corps did not exist for the decade between Emerald Twilight and Green Lantern Rebirth. Kyle Rayner was a solo character, and while his stories were fun, a key part of Green Lantern was entirely missing for a bunch of fans. The Parallax retcon might not have worked for a lot of fans, but it is packaged into the story that revived the corps to a level of narrative quality and significance that it had never seen before. If you like Green Lantern, you almost certainly like things taken from this era, whether you've read it or not. And to me that more than makes up for the 4 or 5 great Parallax Hal Jordan stories that are retroactively weakened

he was still in psychosis. Parallax made him do the extreme stuff, but Hal had to be in a state to be possessed in the first place

Geoff John’s made it better, the original turn was already completely out of character so the retcon made it more accurate to Hal

It makes Sinestro much more villainous as well which is cool

I prefer a compromise that Hal did the stuff he did as Parallax but he wasn't in his right mind. It was him that chose to do those horrible things but it was the entity that made him think that it was a good idea, that he was justified in his actions. He still has to live with the responsibility and the reprocussions but it's tempered by the knowledge that he would never have done it if he wasn't possessed. Plus it echoes Hal's emerald dawn beginnings, grief and trauma leading to alcohol abuse, leading to drunk driving and then choosing to give himself up, pleading guilty to dui, taking responsibility for his actions.

I’m reading through Green Lantern stuff now, and maybe it’s reading the stories back to back, but to flow the Emerald Twilight and Rebirth stuff I’m interpreting that Parallax was able to sink into Hal because of his emotional state. That there was still a part of Hal that was apart of those actions even if Parallax was possessing him. I’ve just caught up to the Rebirth stuff after reading the full Parallax arc so my opinion could change.

The parallax retcon in GL Rebirth is Geoff Johns trying to win old arguments he lost as a kid about a hero that was never all that good. “Nuh uh, his hair was never grey, he wasn’t responsible for what happened, he could beat up Batman!”
