Over the following days and weeks, that clot gradually gets replaced by a soft cartilage callus, essentially a bridge connecting the broken ends together. From there, bone-forming cells step in and replace that cartilage with new mineralized bone, creating what's called a hard callus. This temporarily makes the healing area thicker than the original bone, your body's way of reinforcing the area while it heals. Over the following months, the bone enters a remodeling phase. Specialized cells called osteoclasts remove excess bone while osteoblasts rebuild and reshape it, gradually restoring the bone back to its original size and strength.
