Cyrilla arida Scrub Titi Cyrillaceae The story of the last wild population of Cyrilla arida is a familiar tale for many species on the Lake Wales Ridge. Crafted and honed by millions of years of harsh conditions and genetic isolation on the ancient dune ridges that remained above water while the rest of “Florida” succumbed to the rising oceans (everything old is new again). A species squeezed into a form to fit a habitat distinct from its brethren - small, thick, erect leaves selected to withstand the intense heat and UV radiation. All other Cyrilla species grow in wet soils rich with organic matter, a far reach from the Florida scrub. This population found a way to persist through millennia. Until “civilization” came. First with herds of cattle trampling through, then the continual clearing for sterile rows of pesticide-drenched citrus. And the final insult: acre after acre of bulldozed white sand scars buried under fill dirt for cheaply made yet exorbitantly expensive soulless suburban “neighborhoods” (can you call it a neighborhood if everyone within is a solitary stranger?). First described by J. K. Small (unkle kunkle per Scott) on his botanical treks across the yet-to-be-devastated Florida in the early 1900s. Its existence was debated until it was rediscovered in one tiny sand scrub remnant on a small, lonely lot. This is the last population of Cyrilla arida - another single site endemic on Florida's spine. Once slowly squeezed over millennia of harsh conditions, this remaining genetic sliver is experiencing a new sudden strangulation; choked between roads and houses and various invasive species. The last stand of an agonizing battle. While on the brink of extinction in the wild, Cyrilla arida has found favor in the horticultural world for the beauty of its form, its compelling story, and its adaptability to harsh conditions, so its genes are preserved, but homeless. The story of so many species in the Anthropocene, ourselves included. Adrift from the earth that birthed us, unsure of where we belong. Disconnected from the relationships we were born to be bound to. Victims of “civilization”.
