@tiktokissue1: Her parents left town without leaving her a phone number. She was a teenager with nowhere to go—until her school became her family. In 2010, Burns High School counselor Robyn Putnam noticed that Dawn Loggins was repeatedly wearing the same clothes. Instead of looking away, she bought Dawn a sweater. Then came teachers, custodians, administrators, and other staff members who quietly stepped in to help. When Dawn's parents eventually left North Carolina, she had nowhere to live. A school custodian, Sheryl Kolton, opened her home to Dawn. The school helped her find work, access basic necessities, and continue her education. But Dawn wasn't simply surviving. She was an exceptional student. Her teacher Larry Gardner encouraged her to aim higher and eventually wrote her recommendation for Harvard. Then the letter arrived. Dawn had been accepted. In 2012, she graduated from Burns High School and headed to Harvard University, where she earned a degree in linguistics. But she didn't forget the people who had helped her. Instead of keeping all the support she had received for herself, Dawn helped establish the Uplift Fund, intended to support students facing homelessness and hardship at her former school. Her story isn't just about getting into Harvard. It's about what happens when ordinary people decide that one struggling teenager will not be allowed to fall through the cracks. Sometimes a life changes because one person notices. And sometimes that one act of kindness becomes a whole community saying: “You're not alone.”
