They first appeared during the Triassic Period and eventually became the dominant land animals on Earth. There were many different kinds of dinosaurs, ranging from small, fast-moving hunters to enormous plant-eating dinosaurs. They lived in forests, deserts, plains, and other environments across the planet. Dinosaurs lived during three major periods: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. During these periods, the Earth changed greatly, and dinosaurs evolved into many different species. Famous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and Brachiosaurus lived at different times. Some dinosaurs were predators, while others ate plants, and they had many different adaptations that helped them survive. For millions of years, dinosaurs were extremely successful. However, around 66 million years ago, something happened that caused a major mass extinction. This event occurred at the end of the Cretaceous Period and is known as the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Most dinosaur species disappeared during this event, although scientists know that birds are actually living dinosaurs and survived the extinction. The leading explanation for the extinction is that a massive asteroid struck Earth near what is now the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Scientists have found a huge impact crater called Chicxulub, which is about 180 kilometres wide. The asteroid was probably around 10 kilometres across, and its collision released an enormous amount of energy. The impact caused devastating effects around the world. It produced powerful shock waves, earthquakes, enormous amounts of heat, and huge amounts of dust and other material that entered the atmosphere. There may also have been large fires and powerful waves. These immediate effects caused many organisms to die, but the longer-term changes to Earth’s climate were especially important. Dust and other particles in the atmosphere blocked some sunlight from reaching Earth’s surface. This caused global temperatures to fall and made it much harder for plants to grow. Since plants form the base of many food chains, plant-eating animals struggled to find enough food. Predators were then affected because their prey became less abundant. Volcanic activity may also have contributed to the extinction. Around the same general period, enormous volcanic eruptions were occurring in an area of what is now India known as the Deccan Traps. These eruptions released large quantities of gases and could have affected Earth’s climate. However, the asteroid impact is considered the main cause of the sudden mass extinction. Not every dinosaur disappeared, because birds survived and continued evolving into the many bird species that exist today. The extinction also allowed mammals and other surviving animals to occupy ecological roles that had previously been dominated by dinosaurs. Over millions of years, these changes helped shape the world we live in today. Dinosaurs may have vanished as non-avian animals, but their fossils continue to provide scientists with evidence about Earth’s ancient history.
