When I was a teenager I described this to a therapist as feeling like I was everyone's imaginary friend.

im always shocked when people recognize me. even if ive known them decades, and I look the same. my kindergarten teacher recognized me 30 years later, and I still cant wrap my head around being recognized by others. such a weird feeling.

I’m very good at seeing other people and caretaking for them, but the second someone starts asking about me or trying to get past my surface layer, it creates a sense of panic and overwhelm for me. And I’ve joked that it’s because “oh no someone acknowledged that I’m real” because normally I’m used to serving, knowing, and treating others. I have very little experience receiving or being recognized for who I am outside of the role I tend to play for others. But also I was physically abused so sometimes being seen especially if I’m not doing well to me is associated with being physically harmed.

I'm learning so much about myself, or making sense of my experience. It's pretty heartbreaking.

That’s exactly why I hate letting kids “cry it out” although it is very necessary at times

I think all of my emotional needs were met as an infant by both my parents but as I aged and my emotions became more complex (and less “acceptable”) they both disengaged to a large extent. By the time I was a teenager the range of emotions that were tolerated from me became very narrow. Anything outside that (frustration, loneliness, fear, anger, disappointment) was at best ignored, at worst actively punished.

I frequently felt as a child that I was like a lamp or an endtable. Replaceable, insignificant, and while occasionally useful, ultimately nobody cared that I was there or not.

I’ve been meaning to ask this every time I see one of these videos: do you see any potential correlation between emotional neglect and autism? Because I relate to every symptom of emotional neglect you’ve talked about, but I feel like it was inevitable because, being autistic, I had needs that were either unreasonable or unknown to both me and my caregivers.

This makes me think about how often adults will acknowledge other adults out in the world when they pass by but refuse to acknowledge children and infants who are smiling at them. It feels like adults purposefully don't acknowledge young children and I always found it super weird. Like HELLO the baby is smiling and waving, be a decent human and smile back tf🤨

I had no idea I felt this until I analyzed it would I got older. I didn’t realize how bad I was neglected because my parents didn’t outright hit me. I loved physical pain. Whenever I got hurt, it made my feel something. It forced me to realize I existed and I had a body.

My mother had no response to my emotions and I think she was disgusted by them. When I was 3 my older sister pushed me down the stairs, I was okay but my nose was bleeding and I was really upset. I reached for my mom and she rejected me, told me I was fine and handed me a Kleenex. That was it. Even when I was that young, she made me feel ridiculous for crying. It was such a weird, unnatural dynamic. I really did feel like I didn't exist.
