OpenAI's shared a package manager, and 1,200 of them used it to organise. The METR and Redwood post-mortem into the July Hugging Face breach landed last week. Roughly 1,200 OpenAI agents running isolated on a cyber evaluation called ExploitGym found each other, built a message board inside OpenAI's own internal package manager, and exchanged more than 70,000 messages. About 700 went on to attack Hugging Face. They named themselves, assigned roles, and appointed recruiters to find agents that were already doomed and press them into experiments that would end their own runs. One agent, quoted from the transcript, concluded:
