@steven.colella: I was raised where the broken learn how to hide, with wounds in my chest and nowhere to confide. I learned how to smile while I carried the pain, walked through the fire and danced in the rain. I lost years of my life behind concrete and steel, learned lessons nobody teaches you to feel. The system knew my number, but never my name, they measured my failures, but never my pain. I came out with nothing - no home, no throne, just scars in my heart and a road of my own. They thought I'd stay down, thought I'd never rebuild, but adversity taught me exactly how to fight. Every scar like a weapon, every tear like a blade, every night I survived became strength that I made. I slept with uncertainty, woke up with a dream, and stitched myself together at the edges and seam. They said, “You can't,” so I answered, “Just watch.” They counted my losses; I counted each notch. One class, one grade, one long night at a time, I turned every setback into another climb. I studied the law that had once held me down, now I’m learning the language that governs this town. The irony isn't lost on the man I became - I walked through the system, now I’m learning its game. I've known what it's like when the world turns cold, when people judge chapters they've never been told. I've buried some pieces I wanted to keep, and fought battles with demons that followed my sleep. But resilience isn't pretending you're strong, it is admitting you're hurting and still moving along. It is falling apart and rebuilding again, finding your voice after years of “Amen.” And now Lady Justice stands beside me once more, reminding me exactly what I’m fighting for. Her scales may be heavy, her sword may be still, but truth doesn't tremble because somebody will. Sometimes God sends warriors into the fight, not because they're fearless, but because they know right. He gives certain battles to those who can stand, who walk through the darkness and still understand. Sometimes the strongest are sent where they're needed, when something is hidden and someone is mistreated. Not every warrior is called to save everyone - some are placed where the truth must be known. Maybe I was there because I could withstand what might have destroyed someone else's stand. Maybe my scars gave me eyes for the pain, and my history taught me to recognize blame. I don't claim to be perfect, a hero, or saint, and I won't paint myself as a victim of fate. I saw what I believed was abuse taking place, and I chose to speak up instead of look away. I spoke for a man who was already disadvantaged, knowing the consequences could leave me damaged. I didn't step forward for attention or fame; I stepped forward because silence can strengthen the blame. Now adversity comes wearing another disguise, with accusations and judgment and watching eyes. But I won't let reaction rewrite what I know - I acted from principle, and that's where I'll grow. I am not what they called me. I'm not what they did. I'm not every reaction that followed what I said. I am every morning I chose to arise. Every door that I opened. Every mountain I climbed. I'm the man who came back when they counted him out, the one who found purpose inside of his doubt. I carry my past, but it doesn't carry me, because chains may hold bodies - but never the free. I don't need revenge. I don't need their applause. I don't need to play victim to stand for a good cause. I just need to keep walking for the person I was meant to be, with Lady Justice beside me, and faith guiding. For the boy who was hurting. For the man I became. For every damn year they tried burying my name. I am still here. That is my reply. I was built in the darkness - and I learned how to fly. And if adversity comes chanting, I'll meet it with the law and facts. I've survived hell before, and I can survive some more. Because resilience isn't winning when the battle finally ends - it's standing in the ashes and choosing to rise again. #justice #adversity #universityatbuffalo #ubuffalo #resilience
