top three best restaurants I’ve ever been to in my life and I live in nyc and previously las vegas lmao. I’ve always heard of this place and finally decided it was time to see what it’s all about while visiting michigan for my birthday this week. I grew up fairly close but don’t think I’ve ever actually been to hazel park lol not a whole lot going on there, but definitely ferndale potential energy. the only available reservation for the week was this 5pm thursday slot, but we pulled up and the parking lot was already full. as soon as you walk in, I felt the energy pretty intensely. we watched James Rigato’s video on the drive in, pretty cool lore on the name of the place. anyways the staff were supremely inviting, courteous, and pleasant. we were sat in the wine cellar which felt like a room out of harry potter or game of thrones. it feels like a place that doesn’t try to impress you. and that’s exactly how it gets you. the room is dim, red light bleeding through stained glass like a confession booth for people who love food a little too much. the walls are scarred, chipped, imperfect. like they’ve lived a life, like they’ve seen late nights, long bottles, loud laughter, and quiet reckonings. nothing here is precious. everything here is intentional. heavy wooden tables sit low and grounded, meant for leaning in. for elbows. for spilling wine and telling the truth. the chairs don’t beg you to linger, but somehow you do anyway. the ceiling arches overhead like an old European cellar; monastic, almost; while that iron chandelier hangs above the table like a halo for sinners. shelves of wine watch you from the edges of the room, not showy, not curated for instagram. just there, waiting to be opened. the whole place hums with a sense that what matters isn’t décor or polish, but what happens once the food hits the table. this is a dining room for people who believe meals should be taken seriously, but not reverently. a room that understands that the best conversations happen under bad lighting, after the second glass, when nobody’s pretending anymore. it’s not elegant. it’s honest. from there it was a wedge salad that ruined all other wedge salads for us, cold, crunchy, unapologetically indulgent. then a potato leek bisque so rich and layered it felt engineered to humble you, with bacon doing exactly what bacon was put on this earth to do. and then the steak frites. perfectly cooked, deeply beefy, drowning in sauces that should be illegal, fries that demanded respect. excess without apology. technique without ego. best restaurant in michigan. full stop. a place that stays with you, that keeps tugging at you days later, long after the plates are cleared. the kind of cooking that makes you want to come back, sit at the bar, shake the chef’s hand, and say thank you. we’re already planning the return for the tasting menu. been telling everyone we know since we left. that’s how you know it’s real. I pray you get to try it for yourself #puremichigan #metrodetroit #peak #ilovelife #michigan
