@allfarenzo1: A black hole doesn't simply swallow a star. 🕳️⭐ If a star passes too close to a black hole, something far more violent can happen. The black hole's gravity is not equally strong across the entire star. The side facing the black hole feels a stronger gravitational pull than the far side. This difference creates enormous tidal forces. The star begins stretching. And stretching. Until it is eventually torn apart. This process is called a tidal disruption event. The star's matter is pulled into a long stream of extremely hot gas and plasma. But the material doesn't simply vanish. Some of it can be thrown outward. Some remains gravitationally bound to the black hole. That bound material begins orbiting the black hole. As streams of debris collide and interact, they lose orbital energy. Over time, much of the material settles into a rotating disk around the black hole. An accretion disk. The gas becomes incredibly hot as gravitational energy is converted into heat and radiation. The result can be spectacularly bright. For a short period, the destruction of one star can make an otherwise quiet black hole dramatically visible across enormous cosmic distances. And the strangest part? The black hole itself isn't what we're seeing. We're seeing the blazing aftermath of the star... as its final material spirals toward the black hole. A star gets too close. Gravity tears it apart. And its remains become a disk of fire... orbiting a black hole.
