Very true! Colors is honestly my favorite part along with shading. I'm a color theory nerd KDNJDDN Best basic advise I have without cracking out a color wheel is as follows: - Learning the most common color pallets with a color wheel will make breaking those rules easier of course - I usually shade picking a color and skewing the highlight one direction on the color slider and the shadow on the other. Doesn't matter which direction you go as long as you're consistent. Means you're making your highlights towards say warm colors and your shadows towards cool colors (or the inverse) - Try doing the colors by hand then apply blending modes/gradient maps. Doing it that way of course helps learning and then adding modifications can get you un-stuck if you're stumped on something ^^ I usually make a duplicate of what I'm working on so I don't make any permanent changes until I'm happy with it These are just general tips based on how I do things; more than fair if other people do other techniques. The drawing also turned out lovely! :D

Yes omg color is deceptive bc color sometimes (especially the saturated ones) doesn’t really translate to value bc the saturation makes you see color differently

my tip to use them as underpainting also try to use curves it's basically gradient maps but better this recent artwork is just an experiment of mine using thisnew technique i recently used.

Gradient mapping also doesn’t work the same from CSP to procreate. Really long story so you don’t have to read the whole thing if you don’t want to . But when I first learned gradient mapping it was in procreate. Now I’m somebody that’s color disabled, I can’t see colors in the same range wouldn’t given a test I can see approximately 14 total colors on a spectrum. Gradient mapping is great for me. If you have all of your stuff colored out, in the way that you would want it to look like in another color, hitting the gradient map on procreate takes it from blue to purple or purple to green, it is very simple to do once you’ve gotten it down. Now moving from this to clip studio paint I was unable to re-color my assets the way that I wanted. The gradient mapping is a little bit different same idea but different on how the tool actually works. I am currently still not able to re-color my assets. Mind you I make assets for like a dress up game. The gradient mapping on procreate was a really great tool for me to change it from one color to another and then add some minor differences so it looks like an upgraded version of that product, or just a change in color for changing the color in a selection. I don’t personally know color theory, at least not via a textbook, again I’m very limited on what I can and cannot see. What this person’s doing here is grayscale and then gradient mapping from there. I do suggest starting in color and then gradient mapping. This is how I did it, and it worked very well for me I’m able to take my images from the color that they are into a grayscale, I work with a lot of rainbows, and rainbow highlight when I finish hairpieces. It does retain some of its color, but once you’re in grayscale trying to take it to color, my rainbow highlights don’t maintain the same color or color values. So if this is something you want to try learning, it might help to start in color rather than grayscale. Start by drawing something normally and then gradient mapping it.
