So many of these people complaining are not interested in supporting sapphic stories, they’re more interested in litigating definitions of queerness online. And we know this because none of them have read the authors lesbian novel either!

I’m starting to get tired with people thinking bisexuality is inherently less wlw than lesbianism

As a bisexual and a book lover, I get where everyone is coming from. I think the bisexual nature of the book could have been advertised better so people didn't feel blindsided/betrayed of the relationship with the man that they weren't expecting, but I also get the point that it was called sapphic and not lesbian because they are different things. Yes they are both WLW, but it's kind of like how all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. All lesbians are sapphic but not all sapphics are lesbians. And I think having a relationship with a man doesn't inherently make someone male centered, but that's a separate conversation 😅

my understanding was that sapphic meant any WLW, not just lesbian, in a similar way people use achillean to describe MLM books with mmc who are bi/pan/etc instead of just gay, so i dont get why it’s people are mad it’s sapphic?

The issue that ive seen be talked about by the lesbian community is the issue with the marketing. It wasn't ever promoted as having a M/F relationship, especially such a predominant one snuck in there until the second reviews came out. It feels misleading to not actually indicate the true nature of the relationship pairings when you've marketed it as sapphic - which means the WLW aspects of the story should be the most predominant and endgame.

Idk, if I'm told Sapphic and there are two women on the cover I'm going to assume (regardless if there is a man in the triangle or not) it swings to the woman in the end. The FMC is sapphic, and she can be marketed as such, but *I* would not call this book a sapphic romance if the canon romance is not sapphic on the end. Queer/Bisexual romance, sure. I think we can push back against Bi erasure by calling it a Bisexual Romance. (Now if everyone is wrong and FMC does get with Lady Death in the end, have at it, call it sapphic romance)

I know nothing. But if you told me it was a sapphic Phantom of the opera retelling. I would 100% assume the Phantom was a woman and Raul would still be a man cause narratively I think that kind of makes sense on the theme of Phantom of the opera. I guess you would call it a love triangle but I don’t think that’s really the point of the book.

It’s insulting that people feel like they essentially need a “trigger warning” for a bi woman and her written bi experiences. 🙄

Reminds me of a sapphic book that got a lot of hate because the lesbian fmc doesn’t have a love interest. They said it was queerbaiting despite the fmc being a lesbian and has moments where she checks other women out and how she talks about them compared vs how she talks about men.

I and many other arc readers are TIRED from this. I got told I was “forgiving lesbianbaiting” LMAO all cause I said hey I read the arc due to working in publishing and it sucks to have to spoil a PHANTOM OF THE OPERA retelling that is known for its love triangle! had to explain that the mLI was very much a stand in for society and nationalism and expectations, and I just feel so so awful for Maddie, who has always written sapphic stories and wlw and most notably is a queer woc!! Like it’s not lost on me that Maddie of all authors is getting this heat for a nothingburger of a person reading a biphobic arc review and taking it for gospel

I feel so bad for the author and all bisexual people bc what the hell. Sapphic is literally an umbrella term for wlw. Why is it there is such a huge divide of acceptance in the community? It’s awful

I just don't like how everyone is policing queer women in this "discourse". "The mc is male centered" she's bisexual, part of that queer label is our multi attraction. At the end of the day people are upset because the bisexual woman isn't the version of bisexual they like, it isn't comfortable for them, because the idea of bisexuality discomforts them. Bisexuality does not need a content warning and to think otherwise is queerphobic. The mc is bisexual, making this a queer story REGARDLESS of her relationship with the man. She's queer, she's a sapphic, and pursues a sapphic relationship, so of course the sapphic tags are going to be used. There should never be this much outrage and erasure over bisexual women, let alone a fictional one

Heated rivalry also had a bisexual character if I remember correctly, and red white and royal blue. So why is it that it’s only an issue if a girl is bisexual in a book

This is why these books need to be advertised as Bi or Lesbian and not just Sapphic, because if the book was advertised as a Bi w/w/m love triangle, no one would have complained that it wasn't only a wlw story

I feel like this is a nuanced situation that people online just can’t talk through. I understand sapphics not wanting to read sapphic books that involve men in a love triangle cause there’s already a minuscule amount of sapphic stories compared to M/M & M/F and the book’s promo kind of hid his existence. But then, outside of that as a reader it is important to be able to read stories that aren’t 100 reflective of my identity. And yes, I think the fact that she ends up with lady death makes this a sapphic book, but also I understand people wanting to read a book like this sans male love interest, doesn’t give them an excuse to be losers & biphobic though.
