@thedizzycook: Fatigue, headaches, hair loss, anxiety - I had all the classic symptoms of iron deficiency, yet I was blaming half of it on postpartum and the other half on my migraine disorder. It took me over a year to find out my low ferritin was causing or worsening a lot of my symptoms and I finally advocated to see a hematologist. I’ve managed to get my low ferritin raised from 11ng/ml with 10.9 hemoglobin up to a ferritin level of over 100 with my hemoglobin now at 13.4 with the help of dietary changes, supplements, and iron infusions. Every little bit counts! A few key takeaways on building iron rich meals. 1. The best absorption will happen when you pair iron with vitamin c. Learned this from @Whitney at Whitness Nutrition - so I always pair any high iron foods with foods rich in vitamin c. This is why the beef + pepper combo is 💯! 2. Try to lower the dairy when having iron rich meals. Calcium can reduce iron absorption so when I’m eating iron rich foods, it can help to reduce a lot of added dairy. These recipes either are dairy free or can be customized! 3. Separate iron rich foods from coffee and tea, which can inhibit absorption. 4. Use a good quality cast iron pan for cooking! You can find them all recipes linked in my profile or on my website. I included a secret bonus iron-rich smoothie in this. 😄
