The movie presents Instrumentality, a bizarre and haunting process where all human souls merge into a single cosmic soup, eliminating pain and separation forever, but Shinji ultimately rejects this false paradise because he realizes that even though life is full of hurt, betrayal, and confusion, the genuine moments of joy, love, and understanding are worth the suffering, and the film ends with one of the most debated and iconic scenes in anime history: Shinji and Asuka lying on a blood-red beach, where he breaks down and cries, and she looks at him with tired but real eyes, saying "How disgusting," which somehow feels like the most honest and strangely hopeful conclusion possible, because it means they have returned to their messy, imperfect, painful reality, choosing to live as individuals rather than disappear into nothingness, and that raw, uncomfortable, yet ultimately life-affirming message is exactly why The End of Evangelion remains a timeless, powerful, and unforgettable work of art that still haunts and inspires viewers decades later. - @slowherox_2
