I have 2 roommates that have worked for cruises including both behind the scenes and face to face service they both told me they get a set salary and only time they get extra is if they get tipped in person the cruise line does nothing to give them extra from these “ auto gratuities “ so there you have it I tip accordingly for services met in person.

Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is the crew members work on a guaranteed contract and they don't get any more or less even if all the guests removed gratuities. So the only way they make extra money is if you tip in cash.

funding the staff's wages is the cruise lines job, not the people. cruise lines need to pay a livable wage. it has already been proven by the employees that whether you pay or not pay the tips, their salaries remain the same.

I'm Australian. The cruise line is responsible for paying staff, not me. Royal Caribbean did stuff different on Australian-based Quantum of Cs but I don't recall details.

@winter:it depends on which cruise line you are cruising in..Some cruise lines have Basic/Fixed Salary for all their employees and the salary is not affected whether All guests remove or pay the gratuities because they have basic salary, BUT Royal Caribbean Employees especially Room Steward and Wait Staff dont have Basic/Fixed Salary and all depends on the number of gratuities paid..If guests keep on removing gratuities the salary is dramatically affected by this..SO PLEASE if youre cruising on Royal Caribbean DONT remove the gratuities, because thats the reason we are workin hard for our family...

me and my wife we do both they keep opportunities and pay it in full before we go on our cruise and I take money to tip our main waitress and whatever attendance that we come close with on the cruise
