My fellow Namibians, today I spent the day with MY MOTHER and I was reminded once again that the Revolutionary Spirit flowing through me did not begin with me. I AM THE SON OF THE LIBERATION STRUGGLE. ✊🏿🇳🇦 My mother left Namibia at a very young age during the struggle for the Fundamental Rights and Liberation of our People. Like many young Africans of her generation, she sacrificed the comfort of home and the innocence of youth because there was a country that needed to be liberated. Her revolutionary journey took her to CUBA 🇨🇺, where she lived and studied. She speaks Spanish fluently and became part of a generation profoundly shaped by the internationalist solidarity that Cuba extended to the liberation struggles of Southern Africa. Cuba did not share a border with Namibia or Angola.Yet thousands of kilometres away, the Cuban people understood a fundamental revolutionary principle: THE STRUGGLE OF AN OPPRESSED AFRICAN IS THE STRUGGLE OF EVERY HUMAN BEING WHO BELIEVES IN FREEDOM. Under El Comandante Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, Cuba stood in solidarity with Africa when our continent was confronting colonialism, apartheid and foreign domination. That history lives in my mother.And through my mother, THAT REVOLUTIONARY SPIRIT LIVES IN ME. The Bible teaches us: “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.” — Proverbs 1:8 Mother, I have heard you. I have witnessed your sacrifice. I understand that the freedom we enjoy today was purchased through the suffering, courage and sacrifice of those who came before us. But our Revolution remains UNFINISHED. The generation of our mothers and fathers fought for POLITICAL LIBERATION. Our generation must now fight for ECONOMIC LIBERATION. What meaning does political independence have to a young Namibian who owns no land? What does freedom mean to a mother raising her children in a shack? What does independence mean when the wealth beneath African soil enriches others while Africans remain poor? AFRICA CANNOT REMAIN RICH IN RESOURCES WHILE AFRICANS REMAIN POOR. Our People must own the LAND. Our People must own the MINES. Our People must participate meaningfully in the BANKS, INDUSTRIES AND ECONOMY. Our children must inherit more than flags, national anthems and memories of liberation. THEY MUST INHERIT ECONOMIC POWER. That is the struggle of our generation. I am eternally grateful that as I walk this difficult road towards the GENUINE ECONOMIC EMANCIPATION OF OUR PEOPLE, my mother stands beside me. I carry her Teachings. I carry the Sacrifices of her generation. I carry the Dreams of the African Child who still waits for the Promises of Independence to become Economic Reality. THE FIRST REVOLUTION GAVE US OUR FLAG.
