I dislike the new compass for the same reason you mentioned at the end. It gives you everything once you explore enough; and while that's nice for completionists who are craving that true 100%, for me it's the same as reducing my game world.
it's been years, and I still go back to Sumeru sometimes, try to look for one more chest, one more time challenge, there's always a hope in me to find something and that keeps me coming back to Sumeru, to Liyue, to Mondstadt, to Inazuma. When I do find something I'm elated and happy and excited to find this new thing I never noticed before! maybe it was a puzzle, a secret passage, a world quest I never started, but it always keeps me coming back.
And when I don't find anything, I walked places I've been before, I saw old puzzles I did, remembered old difficulties I faced with exploration, saw the beautiful game design that goes in every ruin in this game, the environmental storytelling of this game is magnific! So for me, it's still worthwhile to wander a bit in a region.
With the new compass, though? I haven't set foot in Nod Krai in months, the Temple of Space was so beautiful but there's no reason for me to ever go back here. The moon was fun, and now it's over and I know if I ever go back there it'll be only to show someone how to beat those Valiant Chronicles. The new compass is amazing for completionists because you can be done with a region efficiently, but I dislike it exactly because once I'm done with a region, it's as if the game world got smaller, they're effectively dead zones.
