Instead of getting the consumption tax waived at checkout, eligible travelers will pay the tax-inclusive price first and receive the tax refund after customs confirms the goods are leaving Japan. ✈️ ⚠️ One important tip: Don’t check your tax-free purchases into your luggage before customs inspection. You may be asked to show the actual items. Food and cosmetics will also no longer require special sealed packaging, but you still can’t use them before leaving Japan.
