This is very true in medicine. I remember when I was a resident, some consultants would hang up the phone while I was talking to them. One of them told me to write the name of the emergency Doctor who consulted on the page, so that they could yell at them in the morning. I think part of this issue arises from the lack of consequences for bad behavior. I’ve known of surgeons who got sent to anger management for being abusive to learners, and were allowed to return with no repercussions.

"Have you ever worked with any real douchebag doctors?" "Yes, I have met a doctor before"

While as an admitted patient, I had to console a nurse after she was berated in front of me by her Sr. It was awful. I asked her to close the door afterward so she could catch her breath and I could assure her she was doing a great job. She broke down. 🥺 I didn’t want the Sr nurse anywhere near me after that as I couldn’t trust her judgement after doing that to someone

Absolutely fantastic shirt!! Also, yes, as a frequent flyer in the medical system… I’ve even seen this from the patient side and it’s really sad.

I’ve always had amazing doctors..maybe they take the frustrations they have for their patients out on resident or staff instead?? 😬😬of course inexcusable..but just a thought

This won't be news, but I think there are some cultural shifts needed that would help address that. E.g., when I broke my wrist and was admitted for surgery in Ottawa a few years ago, I was shocked that all the women who weren't doctors were referred to as "the girls". It seems like in many ways the desire to hold on to long standing hierarchies in medicine is also enabling these abusive and dismissive behaviours.

Honestly, many carry a "I am better than you, complex". Many male Drs are misogynist. It angers me so much, as I do respect the years of school and the hard work anyone in a profession puts in, however, no one is better than anyone else. I am very intelligent, with commitment and desire, I also could have taken those paths, because I chose not to, is not a reason to think that I am less than. Success is being kind, being thoughtful, being present, being grateful and finding joy.

I tried to explain to an OBgyn that he was using the ultrasound out of focus. He swung at me and only missed me because the patient was in the way.
