The event happened during the week of Jesus' crucifixion and right around his cleansing of the temple. The tree represented the nation of Israel and the temple in Jerusalem. Like the leafy tree, the temple looked impressive and religious on the outside, but it was spiritually barren and failing to produce true fruit for God.
