Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where the stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms and potentially leading to complications. CAUSES OF GERD: 1. Weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES): The LES is a ring-like muscle that separates the esophagus and stomach. If it weakens, stomach acid can flow back into the esophagus. 2. Hiatal hernia: A hiatal hernia occurs when the stomach bulges up into the chest through an opening in the diaphragm, which can cause stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. 3. Obesity: Excess weight can put pressure on the stomach, causing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. 4. Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause the LES to relax, leading to acid reflux. 5. Smoking: Smoking can weaken the LES and reduce saliva production, which can worsen acid reflux. 6. Certain foods and drinks: Consuming certain foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, spicy foods, and caffeine, can trigger acid reflux. SYMPTOMS OF GERD: 1. Heartburn: A burning sensation in the chest and throat. 2. Regurgitation: Food or sour liquid returning to the mouth. 3. Difficulty swallowing: Trouble swallowing food or feeling like food is stuck in the throat. 4. Chest pain: Pain in the chest or arm that worsens with deep breathing or movement. 5. Coughing or wheezing: Coughing or wheezing due to stomach acid flowing into the lungs. COMPLICATIONS OF GERD: 1. Esophagitis: Inflammation of the esophagus. 2. Stricture: Narrowing of the esophagus. 3. Barrett's esophagus: A precancerous condition where the esophageal lining changes. 4. Respiratory problems: Stomach acid flowing into the lungs can cause respiratory problems. TREATMENT OF GERD: 1. Lifestyle changes: Maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, avoiding trigger foods, and elevating the head of the bed. 2. Antacids and acid reducers: Over-the-counter medications that neutralize stomach acid. 3. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs): Prescription medications that reduce acid production. 4. H2 blockers: Prescription medications that reduce acid production. 5. Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to strengthen the LES or repair a hiatal hernia.
