HMRC are a disgrace. They ignored all of my letters and calls when my partner got sectioned under the mental health act, and was unable to deal with her finances. She had simply not filed her self-employed tax return and they started charging her fines and interest that grew from £100 in 2023, to over £8,000 as I write this. They wouldn't allow me to pay anything to stop it or explain her situation, because I'm not her legal next of kin. Sadly she has no family, so as I write this, an innocent woman with severe mental illness is amassing a huge debt with HMRC. Meanwhile, as a limited company owner, it's not worth me expanding my business and creating jobs due to the tax and NI implications. The system penalises you and just takes in every direction.

HMRC just go after small and medium business and leave the biggest businesses to do whatever the hell they want - so stupid as it should be proportionate rather than create so many barriers for small and medium businesses

I have just hit the VAT threshold this year after working my arse off to earn a living this year as a consultant and found out my corporation tax bill is £13k which has made me consider should I bother growing my company. It is a kick. It stunts motivation doesnt encourage it.
