My assumption was that he knew full well where Ryan wanted to go with the joke but subverted the expectation as the gag and to break him. Which he did in spades 😄

I think it’s the opposite, and that Colin knows it’s supposed to be “owl / The who”, but, thought that was too obvious, so he just decided to subvert the whole thing, and see in which direction his chaotic creative improv genius took things

This is too nerdy of a response but he didn’t break an improv rule by saying “no”. The reality for Ryan’s character is Collin said the wrong thing. So Ryan’s character can say no because they are still saying “yes” to the shared reality they are in.

Colin was/and still is a master of chaos. But, some behind the scenes, Colin and Ryan had a limited list of artists they could use, which is probably why Ryan was trying to turn it back to The Who, although, they’ve thrown curveballs to Linda on the piano before which kept the improv up.

Colin was an expert at breaking the show. From his Newscasters names and the Knick Knack Paddy Whack to his greatest show breaker "We're watching animal p0rn!!!" When Colin lets loose, he takes everyone with him. I will always love him for that.
